“Brilliant . . . Startling and ingenious . . . Mr. Bradbury’s account of this insane world, which bears many alarming resemblances to our own, is fascinating.” —Orville Prescott, The New York Times“A masterpiece . . . A glorious American classic everyone should read: It’s life-changing if you read it as a teen, and still stunning when you reread it as an adult.” —Alice Hoffman, The Boston Globe“The sheer lift and power of a truly original imagination exhilarates . . . His is a very great and unusual talent.” —Christopher Isherwood, Tomorrow“One of this country’s most beloved writers . . . A great storyteller, sometimes even a mythmaker, a true American classic.” —Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Ray Bradbury (1920–2012) was the author of more than three dozen books, including Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, as well as hundreds of short stories. He wrote for the theater, cinema, and TV, including the screenplay for John Huston’s Moby Dick and the Emmy Award–winning teleplay The Halloween Tree, and adapted for television sixty-five of his stories for The Ray Bradbury Theater. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, and numerous other honors.

Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 is a masterwork of twentieth-century literature set in a bleak, dystopian future.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden.

Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television.

When Mildred attempts suicide and Clarisse suddenly disappears, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known. He starts hiding books in his home, and when his pilfering is discovered, the fireman has to run for his life.

If all you get out of this book is the "removal" of books from society to become more connected to our electronic devices I feel so bad for you This is a must read book!! But I will say that I have a totally different point of view to the story than what most, in fact, all the reviews and editorials I have seen. I am not a bookworm and so the idea that books are gone is not an apocalyptic idea. The book was written before the internet and the information age. It is WHY the books are burned and WHAT the books represent that should open your eyes and minds while reading this book.If all you get out of this book is the "removal" of books from society to become more connected to our electronic devices I feel so bad for you.The point of burning the books is explained. I might give just a couple of spoilers, but everyone knows the premise of 1984 and this book is similar. It is so much more than about books. It is about censorship and the people wanting it. The government has banned all printed material except for comic books, 3D pornographic magazines, "good old confessions" and trade journals. All other printed material is deemed too offensive to someone. So much in-fighting in society because everyone claiming something offends them. So to make everyone happy, the offensive materials are removed. Because of the year this was written (1953) Ray Bradbury could have not envisioned the internet. If he had, it would have been heavily censored also. In 1953 ideas and knowledge were shared through print as they had been for hundreds of years.According to the book, the people wanted the offensive materials removed. Because everyone is offended by something then everything is offensive, it must all be destroyed. For me the novel rings true about how easily people are offended by another person's ideas, thoughts, actions, beliefs. In the story those things are still allowed (they can't control what you think), but without being able to write them down ideas and thoughts die pretty fast.Ultimately the story is about freedom and not being so judgmental of others lest ye be judged. If you look around today, 11/4/2017, this story has never been more relevant. We have protests and attacks in the streets daily based on ideals and beliefs that clash with others. These clashes occur, rather than people going their separate ways and understanding that the beliefs and ideals of others are just as legitimate as their own. Some groups would rather have a scorched earth policy and destroy everything they hold dear, as long as the other side loses everything as well. The author does a very good job at setting up a table of contexts for ... The author of Fahrenheit 451 is Ray Bradbury. He has written several other books including The Illustrated Man, A Sound of Thunder, and Dark Carnival. This book is considered to be fiction. The title fits in with the book because 451 Fahrenheit is the temperature at which the books burn at. I believe it adequately encapsulate the message of the text because the whole story is revolved around burning all the books in the town. The author does a very good job at setting up a table of contexts for you. I would say the book is arranged in sections because there is only three. There are ten characters in the story; their names are Guy Montag, Mildred Montag, Captain Beatty, Professor Faber, Clarisse McClellan, Granger, Mrs. Phelps, Mrs. Bowles, Stoneman and Black. The main characters are Guy Montag, Mildred Montag, Beatty, and Faber. The main idea of this story is Guy Montag tries to explain to everyone and his fire chief that books are useful and they shouldn't be burning them, but to be reading them. Guy Montag and Professor Faber try to come up with a plan to overthrow the status quo of books being illegal. Montag only has 24 hours to be able to read any book and then after that he has to return them back to Captain Beatty. I think this is very different from any other book we would read because normally you don’t see reading books as a negative thing. Most people would write about how people need to get up and go enjoy nature or books rather than sitting inside watching television. I agree with Guy Montag for standing up for what he believes in. I think the tragic accident with the seventeen year old girl who thought books were important really got his attention. A huge surprise happens when Guy’s own wife calls the police on him to be arrested for having books in their house. Mrs. Montag gets in a cab with her suitcase and leaves. While Mr. Montag is left to burn his own house down and all of the copies he made of the books. Captain Beatty tries to attain him by sticking him with anesthetic but he destroys the machine in the fire and escapes with some copies. Montag was able to make it downstream and ran into a group called “renegade intellectuals” this group of individuals also have a love for books. They watch the war that was created from afar and see everything get destroyed with bombs. The group moves on and tries to find some civilization to rebuild a community with them. This book was very interesting to read because of how different it was. I would recommend this book to someone else just have a good read. Fahrenheit 451 was published by Ballantine in 1953. You can find this book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Google Play Books for only $11.99.

Title: The Sugar Queen Pdf A Novel
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this irresistible novel, Sarah Addison Allen, author of the bestselling debut, Garden Spells, tells the tale of a young woman whose family secrets—and secret passions—are about to change her life forever.

Josey Cirrini is sure of three things: winter is her favorite season, she’s a sorry excuse for a Southern belle, and sweets are best eaten in the privacy of her closet. For while Josey has settled into an uneventful life in her mother’s house, her one consolation is the stockpile of sugary treats and paperback romances she escapes to each night. . . . Until she finds her closet harboring Della Lee Baker, a local waitress who is one part nemesis—and two parts fairy godmother. With Della Lee’s tough love, Josey’s narrow existence quickly expands. She even bonds with Chloe Finley, a young woman who is hounded by books that inexplicably appear when she needs them—and who has a close connection to Josey’s longtime crush. Soon Josey is living in a world where the color red has startling powers, and passion can make eggs fry in their cartons. And that’s just for starters.

Brimming with warmth, wit, and a sprinkling of magic, here is a spellbinding tale of friendship, love—and the enchanting possibilities of every new day.

Praise for The Sugar Queen

“Like the most decadently addictive bonbons, once started, Allen’s magically entrancing novel is impossible to put down.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Bewitching . . . Such a pleasurable book.”Publishers Weekly

Strange story line, but it kept me interested enough to keep reading and finish the book This is an interesting book and I was happy enough with the ending. I felt it started off very slow, but the oddness of the first chapter got me hooked. But I went back and forth on my decision to finish the book or not. In the beginning it felt like I'd started reading at a midpoint instead of the beginning. I've never read anything else by this author so maybe it's just her style that I have trouble following. The characters were rather flat for the better part of the first half of the book, but then it picked up and I was rooting for one in particular. However, there were some pieces that never had satisfying resolutions. I kept waiting but it never happened. And when it seemed like they might, the book ended.I gave it three stars because she has a good writing style. I just think the story needed to be fleshed out a little more, especially because there was more than one storyline going on at the same time. I would have liked to say more, but I don't want to ruin the book for someone else with spoilers. Bottom line; well written and interesting premise once you actually figure out what the premise is. I'd try another of her books. You'll be delighted ... at every turn of the page ♥ I read all the reviews about this story getting off to a slow start and concluded that this seemed to be my experience as well. I just couldn’t wrap my head around Della Lee setting up residence in Josey’s closet. All through the story, something about her being there … in the closet … gave me some angst and yet … I kept reading. And if you know Sarah Addison Allen well enough from all of her other stories, you’ll stick with this one and I invite you to do so because at some point, the entire story comes together … like some kind of knitted sweater that seems to be coming together in pieces and then all of a sudden, the arms are attached to the bodice and perhaps the hem is knit in place and the collar is set to embrace the chest which demands a piece of artistic jewelry to complement the entire garment.Oh, my, goodness … this story is delicious! Every character … every conversation and every place and moment is knit together in the story so perfectly than when the story gets wrapped in its beautiful package, the reader feels like they have received the most precious gift … one that they will cherish forever!I loved this story! I loved it soooo much more than I thought I would and that my friend, was the precious, unexpected and delightful gift I received from finishing this book. I invite you, the potential reader, to take a risk and begin the journey to a place of no return and when you’re done … when you’re finished, you'll place the book in a sacred place … a place that will beckon you time and time again to pick it up and take another emotional journey to a place of peace, delight and refuge.Go ahead … you deserve it!

Author: Tom Wolfe

“Tom Wolfe is a groove and a gas. Everyone should send him money and other fine things. Hats off to Tom Wolfe!” ―Terry Southern“The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is not simply the best book on the hippies, it is the essential book . . . the pushing, ballooning heart of the matter . . . Vibrating dazzle!” ―The New York Times“Some consider Mailer our greatest journalist; my candidate is Wolfe.” ―Studs Terkel, Book Week“A Day-Glo book, illuminating, merry, surreal!” ―The Washington Post“Electrifying.” ―San Francisco Chronicle“An amazing book . . . A book that definitely gives Wolfe the edge on the nonfiction novel.” ―The Village Voice“Among journalists, Wolfe is a genuine poet; what makes him so good is his ability to get inside, to not merely describe (although he is a superb reporter), but to get under the skin of a phenomenon and transmit its metabolic rhythm.” ―NewsweekTom Wolfe's much-discussed kaleidoscopic non-fiction novel chronicles the tale of novelist Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters. In the 1960s, Kesey led a group of psychedelic sympathizers around the country in a painted bus, presiding over LSD-induced "acid tests" all along the way. Long considered one of the greatest books about the history of the hippies, Wolfe's ability to research like a reporter and simultaneously evoke the hallucinogenic indulgence of the era ensures that this book, written in 1967, will live long in the counter-culture canon of American literature.

Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test ushered in an era of New Journalism, "An American classic" (Newsweek) that defined a generation. "An astonishing book" (The New York Times Book Review) and an unflinching portrait of Ken Kesey, his Merry Pranksters, LSD, and the 1960s.

It is the the key book defining the history of the intelligentsia of the best parts of the emerging psychedelic movement in the 60's This book is a "must read"! It is the the key book defining the history of the intelligentsia of the best parts of the emerging psychedelic movement in the 60's. Its Main character is Ken Kelsey, famous for writing "One Flew Over the Cook-coo's Nest". One of Tom Wolfe's best, and clearly his most significant work.A Merry Important Book!!! I thought this was a great book. Getting the inside scoop on this historical piece of history and wild guys and gals that made up The Merry Pranksters was extremely valuable to me personally. After reading many books of both the Beat Generation as well as the Hippie Era including a lot of works focusing on the bands, the signature artists of those times, this book is so important regarding the gap between the Beats and the Hippies. This book isn’t sugar coated too much, so it’s raw, honest and exploratory. Learning in good detail about the Pranksters main/notable people, their ties to society and in contrast, their anti-establishment attitudes and spontaneous actions and unspoken rules, is to say the least entertainingly exciting. These folks were a large part in making the mid to late 60’s what they were. As a Grateful Dead lover/DeadHead, it was more than enthusiastic learning about their late entry in this story, along with some amazing figures of the times including Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Ramrod, Neil Cassidy and of course, Ken Kesey (among many other critical historical persons who all had their part in shaping the counterculture gapping generations). A very quick read, and interesting for me to read about the pioneering psychedelic warriors, how they were “Turned On” and how they spread the message to the masses in such unusual form. The rebels of their time, along with some truly EPIC pranks, parties and perseverance. What I really enjoyed about this book is that it doesn’t highlight a bunch of happy go luck good times. It shows the truly raw side of the bunch. It has some incredibly gloomy details that emerge as a result of being together as a wild “family”, with some eye opening realizations that are important for readers to know. That point being that even in best of times follows the worst of times. There is no light without darkness, “Art is not Eternal”, and a surreal vacation from the normal realm will at some point have you realize that sometimes a normal vacation from the never ending trip is important! So, I found this book to be a fun read, an important piece of literature linking the beats to the hippies, an incredible cast of real life people, and how far some rebels have to go to truly make their mark on society to push what they believe in without resorting to extreme violence.I think the best thing to say about this book is that it made me think. Long and hard, sometimes. The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. I'd been meaning to read this book for years. Like all things of expectation, it wasn't what I thought it would be. What ever is, really?I struggled early with Wolfe's prose. He came off as incredibly ranty, and needlessly verbose, in a sometimes distracting way. He used a lot of hyphens, ellipses, and strange punctuation. (ex: "the lime:::::light::::::"). After some time however I realized that this wasn't how he writes all the time, but rather an attempt to fit his writing to the subject at hand. At first I thought this was somewhat obnoxious, but as I went on I grew more used to it. And besides getting used to it, there were flashes of genuine brilliance in there as well. I mean, some situations were described with such accuracy, insight, and understanding that I was really blown away. These particular portions of the book were, I'm sure, heavily influenced by interviewing primary sources, but regardless Wolfe penned it well.I was appreciative of the fact that throughout the book Wolfe didn't focus solely on the positive and made it clear that there were conflicting interests among even the Pranksters. When in situations like this not everything is happy happy joy joy let's eat acid and mellow out. Interests don't ALWAYS run in the same direction, and when you have someone like Kesey (who is basically a lodestone of the psychedelic variety) running the show there are bound to be rifts and doubts between people. This is a natural thing and I'm glad Wolfe addressed it.I think the best thing to say about this book is that it made me think. Long and hard, sometimes. I found myself reading passages from it and then gazing into the distance in some deep contemplation about anything and everything. The book would spark a thought in me that would turn into a full fledged reflection, maybe even far beyond the points that the book brought up in the first place. Good writing does that I suppose.I will say that I didn't like the way the book ended. It was somewhat anti-climactic in that it sort of just fizzled and went out. Though, I guess you could say the same thing of the Merry Pranksters. There is allegory in that, like so much else in that long, strange trip to go Furthur. COSMO!

In his research for the Gray Man novels, including Agent in Place, Gunmetal Gray, Back Blast, Dead Eye, Ballistic, On Target, and The Gray Man, he traveled to more than fifteen countries and trained alongside military and law enforcement in the use of firearms, battlefield medicine, and close-range combative tactics. He is also the author of the New York Times bestsellers Tom Clancy Support and Defend, Tom Clancy Full Force and Effect, Tom Clancy Commander in Chief, and Tom Clancy True Faith and Allegiance. With Tom Clancy, he coauthored Locked On, Threat Vector, and Command Authority.

The Gray Man is back in another nonstop international thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels.

Fresh off his first mission back with the CIA, Court Gentry secures what seems like a cut-and-dried contract job: A group of expats in Paris hires him to kidnap the mistress of Syrian dictator Ahmed Azzam to get intel that could destabilize Azzam's regime.

Court delivers Bianca Medina to the rebels, but his job doesn't end there. She soon reveals that she has given birth to a son, the only heir to Azzam's rule--and a potent threat to the Syrian president's powerful wife.

Now, to get Bianca's cooperation, Court must bring her son out of Syria alive. With the clock ticking on Bianca's life, he goes off the grid in a free-fire zone in the Middle East--and winds up in the right place at the right time to take a shot at bringing one of the most brutal dictatorships on earth to a close...

Timely, suspenseful ..another great Gray Man adventure "Here we go..." I won an advance copy of "Agent in Place" and devoured it! Set for the most part in Syria, the story is not only compelling, it mirrors current events and actually helped me understand the dynamics of the Iran, Syrian, Russian connections. "The Gray Man" series never disappoints. I love Court Gentry because he never takes himself too seriously but conveys the requisite seriousness for an "action hero." Great read. You will not want to put the book down!A Novel Written in Real Time 500 pages. Exactly 500 pages of intense action that made this book difficult to put down. For this reader, this was the first book read by author Mark Greaney. The writing was incredible and realistic. “Agent in Place” is the 7th book in a series about the Gray Man, Court Gentry, who was a former Christian-In-Action, who continues to provide services to the Agency, as well as his own contract assignments. His assignments are frequently assassinations.Supporters of the Free Syrian Army are in exile in Paris. They are well funded and are focused on bringing down Syrian President Ahmed Azzam (aka Bashar al-Assad). They learn that Ahmed has a mistress, who is a Spanish model and modeling in Paris. Arrangements are made with Court Gentry to kidnap Bianca Medina, as they know that she knows about a meeting taken in Tehran, that should the Russians discover, perhaps would end the dictatorship of Ahmed.Court is successful in the kidnapping, only that it was not easy and was most certainly bloody. At the same time the wife of Ahmed, Shakira al-Azzam (Asma al-Assad) is having an affair with her Swiss financial advisor, and he is a dangerous man that is wanted throughout Europe. Shakira learns of her husband’s mistress and wants Bianca killed while in Europe. The Free Syrian supporters in Europe learn that Bianca has a son, by Ahmed, in Damascus and refuses to help their cause, unless her son can be brought to Europe.Once again Court is called upon, as they need him to go to Syria and snatch the child. Now, who would be crazy enough to go to Syria and snatch the son of the president? Well, that would be Court Gentry, who is not a typical man, and has abilities that most could only dream about. For this reader, reading this novel, it felt like being back on the streets of Damascus. And, what is most interesting is that this novel is in real time, in that the war being fought by several groups is realistically written. It is today’s news. Prior to writing the Gray Man series, Mark Greaney had coauthored the late Tom Clancy novels. While this reader has thoughts about franchising a dead man’s name for novels, Mark Greaney, in his own name, is simply an exceptional writer of action & adventure novels. Time to go on Amazon and order the six previous Gray Man novels. One perilous mission after another. Book seven in this high octane adventure series has Court Gentry back on the good side with the CIA but now as a freelance operative. While he's waiting for his next assignment with them Gentry takes a job through another group. That's why you will find him sitting in the audience at a top designers fashion show in Paris. Take a deep breath during this sequence of events because from here on out this book is one perilous mission after another. If you are looking for fast paced action, you will have located your target with this story. Greaney has allowed the character of Court Gentry to grow and change over the years so watching how the agent operates in such a hostile environment and yet maintain his values is something I enjoy very much. The political quagmire in the Syria of this novel was complicated to the extreme and yet I'm sure Greaney is using information he gets from his research to let us know what it's like just to survive in a country constantly at war within its borders. As always I learn some great information about the intelligence tradecraft and weaponry from reading one of these novels. I was especially interested in the sniper weapon and shooter capability aspects. While the Court Gentry books are all written to be standalone novels (and this one is no exception) I hope you will enjoy this one so much you will want to go back and pick up the first book (The Gray Man). I have read that first book three times and am still impressed with the intricacy of the plotting. Book seven continues that fine plotting legacy.
