AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The twisty new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door and A Stranger in the House

A weekend retreat at a cozy mountain lodge is supposed to be the perfect getaway . . . but when the storm hits, no one is getting away

It's winter in the Catskills and Mitchell's Inn, nestled deep in the woods, is the perfect setting for a relaxing--maybe even romantic--weekend away. It boasts spacious old rooms with huge woodburning fireplaces, a well-stocked wine cellar, and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just curling up with a good murder mystery.

So when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and a blizzard cuts off the electricity--and all contact with the outside world--the guests settle in and try to make the best of it.

Soon, though, one of the guests turns up dead--it looks like an accident. But when a second guest dies, they start to panic.

Within the snowed-in paradise, something--or someone--is picking off the guests one by one. And there's nothing they can do but hunker down and hope they can survive the storm--and one another.

Good - just not great. I loved Lapena’s first two books, but there was something about this book that was just not as satisfying. Sure I didn’t see the ending coming, but there were just so many characters that at the beginning I kept having to go back. Finally I made myself a cheat sheet. So it was good, just not great.I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT...UNTIL THE END I really enjoyed this book: the atmosphere, the setting, the complex characters, etc. I actually slowed down my reading because I didn't want it to end. Up until the last couple of chapters I was riveted. The ending was so unpredictable that I expected the "WOW" factor, but if anything, the ending was indeed unpredictable, but also anticlimactic. Not to mention, how the others discovered who the real killer was after all of the fear and uncertainty, was so simple that it bordered was akin to a Scooby Doo moment. I was thinking, "Really! That's it!" However, other than the disappointing ending, I did enjoy the book. The writing is flawless and the characters were very interesting. I really had no idea "Who did it." Unfortunately, I didn't think that the reasons behind the murders were so deleterious that the killer's only choice was murder. The Ending Makes It Worth Reading Shari's first book, "The Couple Next Door," was so exciting I read it in one sitting. I was delighted when she came out with the second one, which wasn't nearly as fun, but I thought the problem was my mood while reading. I read it, too, in one sitting, and gave it five stars. I pre-ordered "An Unwanted Guest" and could not wait to get my hands on it! I even told my cardiologist that I had to live until August 7th because I really needed to read a new book I'd ordered.I know it's not easy to write a cozy if you've never tried before. I have to give Shari five stars just for completing one. But there are problems. I've been forcing myself to pick it up every day for a week now and just can't get interested. The setting is ridiculous. Who in this day and age and in their right mind would go to stay in a dismal old hotel in the back of beyond with no wifi or generator during bad weather? How dumb are these people -- both the owners and the guests?! Why would there even be such a place? The whole "trapped!" business could have been done so much better. The characters are one dimensional. Even Riley, who I assume is supposed to be the well-fleshed-out crackpot of the group, only seemed mildly (and uninterestingly) schizophrenic. And they all sound/think the same. It's hard to tell one boring character from the other. I was going largely by name and haircolor, although that didn't even keep them straight. And what's with the lawyer? Who made him an expert on anything? He's a lawyer -- they're a dime a dozen everywhere. Why would the owners (and that annoying lawyer) insist on leaving a dead body in place, in full view, in a building full of guests? Put her outside in the ice so she doesn't spread bacteria while she decomposes. Are these characters brain dead altogether?!I couldn't even figure out the relationships between the characters. Are Gwen and Riley supposed to have a thing for each other? They gaze into each other's eyes, and so forth, but there's nothing else to connect them romantically. And the fighting couple and the breaking-up couple -- everybody is a flat cliche'.I figured out who the Bad Guy was the same way I used to teach students how to create a Bad Guy people wouldn't suspect. It was no surprise. But again, I have to give Shari credit for finishing a cozy that, because I tend to hate cozy novels, at least followed the rules of Story. And bless her for the end. I was so absolutely delighted by the end I can't begin to express it. The shaky body of the book was forgotten when I read the end. The book deserves to be read just so you can enjoy the ending.

ISBN: B07KJTLYG7
Title: Click Here to Kill Everybody Pdf Security and Survival in a Hyper-connected World

A world of "smart" devices means the Internet can kill people. We need to act. Now.

Everything is a computer. Ovens are computers that make things hot; refrigerators are computers that keep things cold. These computers - from home thermostats to chemical plants - are all online. The Internet, once a virtual abstraction, can now sense and touch the physical world.

As we open our lives to this future, often called the Internet of Things, we are beginning to see its enormous potential in ideas like driverless cars, smart cities, and personal agents equipped with their own behavioral algorithms. But every knife cuts two ways.

All computers can be hacked. And Internet-connected computers are the most vulnerable. Forget data theft: Cutting-edge digital attackers can now crash your car, your pacemaker, and the nation's power grid. In Click Here to Kill Everybody, renowned expert and best-selling author Bruce Schneier examines the hidden risks of this new reality.

After exploring the full implications of a world populated by hyperconnected devices, Schneier reveals the hidden web of technical, political, and market forces that underpin the pervasive insecurities of today. He then offers common-sense choices for companies, governments, and individuals that can allow us to enjoy the benefits of this omnipotent age without falling prey to its vulnerabilities.

From principles for a more resilient Internet of Things to a recipe for sane government regulation and oversight to a better way to understand a truly new environment, Schneier's vision is required listening for anyone invested in human flourishing.

Escape from a bad Nash The title is a tad too clickbait-y (mine probably as well) but this is still the Bruce you admire and respect, with a clear message and scrupulous work. Long story short: the book warns us of unrelenting expansion of Internet into physical world - the Internet of Things - not coupled with adequate security practices. We are dangerously close to a situation where hackers are able to cause real, tangible damage on massive scale. Bruce discusses how all of this came about, what dangers we are facing, and what we can collectively do to improve the course of things.By “improving”, I mean not only preventing cyber crime, but also protecting privacy and data generated from our actions in the Internet. In a tone set a few years ago in “Data and Goliath”, the author argues that security is weakened by Western governments’ propensity for mass surveillance, unlocked by Internet’s central role in our social lives and economic activities. What Snowden revealed, still holds true. Cryptography is painted by the officials as a tool of criminals. Proponents of privacy-strengthening techniques are labeled as “weak on terrorism”. Elite hackers are employed by governments to find vulnerabilities in systems and networks - not to fix them, but to enable surveillance, espionage and attacks.Another major factor is security being non-trivial to implement properly and not valued in the economy. Stakeholders prefer to have higher profits now, rather than spend on security which may - or may not - help in the future in case of a cyber attack. Security breaches are treated as PR issues, software companies are in vast majority avoiding any liabilities resulting from faulty programming. Most customers are not thinking of security features, making their purchases on the cheap. Production cycles are increasingly shorter, with little space for security testing. This short-term thinking leads to Internet connecting untold millions of devices which are exploitable.Bruce does not believe that market forces can nudge companies towards more secure products. From their perspective, being insecure brings almost no financial harm. Since we are in an equilibrium, where shoddy security is beneficial for most players (and consumers are largely indifferent), the only way out is to change the rules of the game. In other words, policymakers should step up and enforce higher security standards in software, similarly to what historically happened in the automobile, aircraft or pharmaceutical industries. The book is broad in scope - broader than “Data and Goliath” - and its purpose is to form a basis for discussion on the role of digital security in our lives (not only IoT, but the Internet in general). You can be certain that any article you read, concerning security, can be related to concepts pictured herein. It truly serves as “a lay of the land”.My main takeaway is the author’s notion that security is not a problem of technology. Solutions exist. The problem lies in the incentives of people and organizations - as is, in my opinion, with many issues troubling the world today - and correcting those requires concerted effort. We can do better!Absolutely spot on This is by far the best single resource I've found to date on IoT security--what the problems are, how we got to this point, what needs to be done, and why it matters. I've read more books, standards, guidelines, articles, and other text on this topic during the past year than I could remember, and this is the only one I've seen that pulls it all together into a cohesive narrative with the proper level of alarm and a realistic plan of action. I've worked in the security industry for 20 years, and I'm already recommending this book to my colleagues. It's pervading my ideas and discussions The many commonsense ideas that Schneier shares and promoted in Click Here to Kill Everyone are pervading an incredible amount of the ideas and discussions I'm having with other people. It literally has been life-changing for me. I find myself making well-reasoned arguments that when I think about it can be sourced to this book. Everyone involved thinks I'm making some master statement and that I'm smart...and all I'm really doing is promoting what Schneier wrote. I find myself wanting to say, "Read Bruce Schneier's latest book...it's all in there!" And I do, when it's appropriate. I'm not talking about just between friends or on discussion blogs, but in real meetings by serious groups looking to better secure the Internet. Schneier has the plan for how to significantly improve computer security, from a policy and legislative side figured out. Click Here to Kill Everyone is the blueprint for making that happen.

Kevin Horsley Broke a World Memory Record in 2013...

And You're About to Learn How to Use His Memory Strategies to Learn Faster, Be More Productive and Achieve More Success

Most people never tap into 10% of their potential for memory. In this book, you're about to learn:

How the World's Top Memory Experts Concentrate and Remember Any Information at Will, and How You Can Too

Do you ever feel like you're too busy, too stressed or just too distracted to concentrate and get work done? In Unlimited Memory, you'll learn how the world's best memory masters get themselves to concentrate at will, anytime they want. When you can easily focus and concentrate on the task at hand, and store and recall useful information, you can easily double your productivity and eliminate wasted time, stress and mistakes at work.

In this book, you'll find all the tools, strategies and techniques you need to improve your memory.

Here’s just a taste of the memory methods you'll learn in this book:
  • The 3 bad habits that keep you from easily remembering important information
  • How a simple pattern of thinking can stop you from imprinting and remembering key facts, figures and ideas, and how to break this old pattern so you’ll never again be known as someone with a “bad memory”

  • How to use your car to remember anything you want (like long lists or information you need to remember for your studies or personal life) without writing anything down
  • Simple methods that allow you to nail down tough information or complex concepts quickly and easily

  • The simple, invisible mental technique for remembering names without social awkwardness or anxiety
  • How using your imagination to bring boring information to life can help you dramatically improve your attention span and recall
  • An incredible strategy for remembering numbers (the same system Kevin used to remember Pi to 10,000 digits and beat the world memory record by 14 minutes)
  • How to use a mental map to lock in and connect hundreds or even thousands of ideas in your long-term memory (this method will allow you to become a leading expert in your field faster than you ever dreamed possible)

Affixing New Knowledge With Old Knowledge The first few chapters are motivational, getting past one’s inhibitions and self-enforced limitations. In part 2 Horsley goes into a different method in each chapter. Generally, several methods use associating what a person wants to remember with things they know well, a way of affixing new knowledge with established knowledge. In chapter 6, Use your car to remember, a list of items, in this case foods that are good for your mind, is associated with parts of your car. Recalling it now, you imagine putting a tomato in the grill, an orange on the roof, blueberries on your seat, dried fruit on the dash, seeds and nuts in the back seat, an egg in the passenger seat, fish under the hood, etc. Makes for a humorous picture, imagining it, and this is one of Horsley’s major points: using imagination and humorous associations help us to remember. Another method, similar in locating words in locations, is using your own body. Another method, one that has potential for a great many associations, is imagining the items to remember on a journey, whether it be a short journey around your house, or a long journey across the nation. Horsley likes to use lists of qualities from motivational books for several exercises. There are particular methods for remembering numbers, associating them with letters, then making words of those letters; remembering names of people by associating them with actions or prominent characteristics. In closing the author writes about incorporating these methods with self-discipline and reviewing for memory reinforcement. This is not a book I want my money back. I was promised a book. This is not a book. It's a popular science article only the page count has been ridiculously inflated by listing memorisation lists in single column, inserting section breaks after every two to four coherent sentences and filling in motivational blah blah borrowed from elsewhere. The real content of the book can be summarised as follows: use peg words, a visual map of a well know place like your body, car or route to work to hold information you want to memorise. There. Now you don't have to read this piece of pulp. Surely there must be something better written about this fascinating topic?Wonderful resource. As a college student I found this to be an invaluable resource. I have spent so many hours reading things, hearing things, only to forget them and have to study them all again come test time, and then forget them again after the class is over. Many college students seem shockingly ok with forgetting half of what they spent so much money to learn, I for one spent the money to know and remember what I have been taught. These techniques are worth a bar of gold.
