Palestine – December 17, 2001 PDF Free Download

Palestine Paperback – December 17, 2001
Author: Visit ‘s Joe Sacco Page ID: 156097432X

Review

“Sacco uses the comic book format to its fullest extent, creating bold perspectives that any photojournalist would envy.” (Utne Reader)

“Sacco is a pioneer.” (Journal of Palestinian Studies)

“Based on his research, interviews, and personal experiences in Palastinian Occupied Territories in 1991 and 92, [Palestine] takes you there and gives you a first-hand account of the atrocities and suffering in the conflict with Israel. He gives you a close up visual rendering of the physical and emotional conditions of the people, who struggle daily for survival… Sacco has rendered the terrible conditions of life into a compelling and sympathetic artistic documentary. It is sad, but most good stories are sad… What’s better, his drawing is detailed and realistic, very approachable and interesting.” (American in Auckland)

About the Author

Joe Sacco lives in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of many acclaimed graphic novels, including Palestine, Safe Area Gorazde, But I Like It, Notes from a Defeatist, The Fixer, War’s End, and Footnotes in Gaza.

Edward W. Said was University Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of Literature and of Kings College Cambridge, his celebrated works include Orientalism, The End of the Peace Process, Power, Politics and Culture, and the memoir Out of Place. He is also the editor, with Christopher Hitchens, of Blaming the Victims, published by Verso. He died in September 2003.

You have to read Palestine carefully, especially if you are either strongly sympathetic or hostile to Israel. It would be easy to see the book as condemning Israel. It is not, but since Sacco’s intention was to get to know the community that we in the US don’t know well, the Palestinians, the book shows mainly their experiences and interpretations of them. (It would have been a good idea to include a timeline of the historical events related to the Israel/Palestine tragedy, so that people who do not know the facts could put into perspective the versions of history that Sacco’s Palestinian interviewees have.)
I emphasize that this is not the book to turn to in order to figure out whether to side with the Israelis or the Palestinians. It does not give that kind of information, and there are other books for that (Thomas Friedman’s From Beirut to Jerusalem is a good one). For the most part there are no terrorists or major political figures interviewed and there is no survey of the historical background, the mistakes and crimes that have left both peoples in this mess. What I saw in this brilliant piece of comic journalism is an on the ground look at what is going on with people caught in the storm.
Palestine is about the human spirit, often humorous and courageous. It is also about the tragedy that is what happens when people suffer at each other’s hands, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, as well as physically, and lose the ability to see the human face.
Victims turn into villains. The scenes of the settlers attacking the Arab villages at night reminded me chillingly of Kristalnacht. A 16 year old Palestinian terrorist-in-training is chilling as he describes his recruitment at 13, his loss of interest in anything but the violence, and the version of history that he believes in.
This new one volume edition of Joe Sacco’s Palestine comics evokes my first trip to the occupied Palestinian territories in 1989 a couple of years before Sacco’s first visit from 1991-1992. His book faithfully represents the contradictions and striking images of the conflict, and being a graphic novel/comic book renders them visually and powerfully.
I couldn’t think of a better medium to explain the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to someone than this book, which stands out as an honest account of one man’s attempt to make sense of it all, as well as a work of art in its own right.
Powerfully-told stories are laced with well-researched facts, all couched in Sacco’s humanity and disbelief at the people he meets and the events he sees. Particularly chilling is the account of a Palestinian father’s torture experience. The book covers a wide variety of other topics, including refugees, Israeli attitudes, life inside prison, and more, introducing these issues (along with the atmosphere of a visit to Palestine) through Sacco’s walk through the West Bank and Gaza, talking to people there.
The second half of Sacco’s book opens up more of the conflict, this time in the setting of Gaza, but should be considered as indivisible from the first half, as the two halves represent the complete collection of "Palestine" comics originally published as individual magazines, then as a two volume edition.
The visual imagery is almost photographically faithful to the actual landscapes and cityscapes of Palestine, and accounts such as Sacco’s taxi ride to Nablus will elicit delighted cries of recognition and wry laughter from those who have visited the country.
It may be the case that in the United States the issues of the Middle East are presented in a very subjective manner (pro-Israeli) through mainstream media. This is not the case where I live now, where there is a pro-Palestinian sentiment, expressed again in a subjective manner.
The value of this book is relative to the exposure one has already had on the subject. If you do not know much about it, and especially if you have lived in an environment which portrays Palestinians as bad and Israelis as good, then this is a good book for you, that will open your eyes to the other side of the story.
However, you should not then regard this book as the truth. It is subjective as well in its own manner. Its subjectivity lies not so much on the presentation of non-truths, or its certain exagerations, but rather on its omission of truths which support the other side. For example, when the name "Golda Meier" comes up, the book mentions statements she made about the Palestinians which are ridiculous and cruel: and she did make such statements. However, when the name Nasser comes up, he appears only as someone who "symbolises Arab nationalism and unity," which is a great injustice to history and to the reader. Moreover, the coverage of the Israeli side of the story is so superficial, that it would be better if it had been omitted altogether.
Therefore, you should follow up in quest for knowledge on the subject with more material, from both sides. (try not to spend time looking for something "objective!" It does not exist.

Margie is spot on with this book. Her stories are true to life, some hysterical, some realistically sad, but every one of them is true. Reading this book made me feel as though I was back at work on CFD working the ambulance. I finished the book in one sitting and could have read another one, it was that good. Cannot wait for the next book!

As a fellow paramedic, I found this to be a great and truthful read. All the danger and raw emotions that occur in a single shift can truly make or break a human spirit. This is a great read for all but especially the layperson, who I hope can grasp a smidgen of what its like to be in the world of drama/trauma in the big city.

Was a pretty good read, after 20 years in the field in the burbs, and now working in the city 911 center a lot of great stories, some funny some sad…just makes you shake your head…but the book paints a real portrait of what the CFD medics endure… Highly recommend the book..looking forward to #2…

Nevada Road and Recreation Atlas – January 1, 2010 Epub Free

Nevada Road and Recreation Atlas (Benchmark Map: Nevada Road & Recreation Atlas) Paperback – January 1, 2010
Author: Benchmark Maps (Firm) ID: 0929591925

Nevada is known as the wildest adventure state in the lower 48. Finally there’s an atlas to fully corral all of Nevada’s outdoor potential. Careful and thorough field checking and local research have made this atlas an essential resource for both town and country. The Recreation Guide features maps with hunting unit boundaries over public lands tints and emphasize historic trails and points of interest.

Series: Benchmark Map: Nevada Road & Recreation AtlasPaperback: 96 pagesPublisher: Benchmark Maps (Firm); 3 Revised edition (January 1, 2010)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0929591925ISBN-13: 978-0929591926 Product Dimensions: 15.5 x 10.8 x 0.5 inches Shipping Weight: 1 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #30,226 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #11 in Books > Travel > United States > West > Mountain #36 in Books > Reference > Atlases & Maps > United States #57 in Books > Reference > Atlases & Maps > Travel Maps

As far as I have been able to find there are only two major State Atlas publishers: Benchmark and DeLorme. I own both for the State of Nevada (earlier editions of both). Superficially they look the same but if you use them to get off main roads, as I do to explore the back country and to look for good landsailing sites, one quickly realizes that Benchmark is superior. Benchmark has much better descriptions and differentiation of the quality of the smaller roads, even labeling some as 4WD roads. It has greater topographical detail, too. DeLorme is more widely available but it is worth the extra effort to find the Benchmark series.

Agree with the above review. I also have both and Benchmark is much more useful for offroad navigation. Section grids on the map are smaller in area so are more detailed and useful. Different types of roads are illustrated by different colors and difficulty.

I have several other states in the Benchmark series, and Nevada — like those — is superior to the Delorme Gazeteer. The characterization of roads is more accurate — roads that are unpaved are shown as unpaved, and they accurately differentiate between 4×4 roads and better unpaved roads.

Lonely Planet French Phrasebook & Dictionary – April 1, 2015

Lonely Planet French Phrasebook & Dictionary (Lonely Planet Phrasebook and Dictionary) Paperback – April 1, 2015
Author: Visit ‘s Lonely Planet Page ID: 1743214448

Series: Lonely Planet Phrasebook and DictionaryPaperback: 272 pagesPublisher: Lonely Planet; 6 edition (April 1, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1743214448ISBN-13: 978-1743214442 Product Dimensions: 3.7 x 0.6 x 5.5 inches Shipping Weight: 5 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #22,455 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #14 in Books > Travel > Reference > Phrasebooks #38 in Books > Travel > Europe > France > General
This book is a worthwhile purchase if you do not speak French, or do not speak it well. The Lonely Planet series of phrasebooks is tailored towards those who intend to visit another country of a foreign language they do not speak, which makes their resources different from other language acquisition resources. For example, this book is very succinct, compared to academic language books. With that in mind, if this was your only resource while stranded in rural France, you’d best memorize it because it is approaching the minimum for language comprehension outside of standardized French. This book is constructed like a condensed series of notes for high-school French, and it has a relatively complete index. It has sections that are based on utility, like going to a restaurant, or words and phrases useful to the elderly.

I’m a little disappointed in the lack of colonial French references. If a would-be shopper is looking for a book that will help with colonial French, this book is helpful but the definitive resource. Realistically, that would be its own book. But at any rate, the index does not have any reference to South Africa, Réunion (àle Bourbon), or even "colonies." This is something of an oversight. This book would be better than nothing if a shopper intends to visit a(n ex-)French colony, but it discusses standard French and doesn’t cover regional language that you will find in Africa or Québec (not mentioned in the index). This is not a heavy criticism, since the book is tailored to be succinct and address France, not colonies, and Lonely Planet has other books for France’s colonies.

The pronunciation guide is rather strange though. While I didn’t grown up with an Anglicisation for French words, some transliterations strike me as bizarre.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

Series: Prima Official Game GuidesHardcover: 352 pagesPublisher: Prima Games; Pck Har/Ps edition (February 13, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1101898437ISBN-13: 978-1101898437 Product Dimensions: 8.3 x 0.8 x 11.2 inches Shipping Weight: 2.5 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #13,239 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #25 in Books > Humor & Entertainment > Puzzles & Games > Reference #29 in Books > Computers & Technology > Games & Strategy Guides > Strategy Guides #31 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Gaming

I understand that some people might make the arguments that they don’t need a strategy guide, but I disagree with that line of thought most of the time, especially if you want to get everything a game has to offer. Yes, you can search places like YouTube and blogs, but I always prefer a physical book over searching all over the internet. Furthermore, this is a collector’s edition, so in my opinion this awesome limited hardcover edition is very well worth owning just for that reason. That being said this strategy guide was helpful to me right off the bat, and is filled will useful pictures, maps, and tips that will help all gamers. On top of all that I felt that the maps were very well labeled, which helped me a ton in finding items and completing my quests. Speaking of quest, each part of the quest are clearly labeled, so there is no guessing work, which is important, because you only have three game days to finish them before the world ends.

Chapter 0: Introduction
Chapter 1: How To Play
Chapter 2: Items and Gear
Chapter 3: Monsters and Enemies
Chapter 4: Walkthrough
Chapter 5: Legendary Checklist

The bottom line is that strategy guides isn’t a must own for everyone, but I highly recommend picking the Majora’s Mask guide up. Trust me it will help a lot in the end.

This is one of the most beautiful guides I’ve ever bought and a fantastic addition to my guide library. This book is rich with information and will make your journey through Termina even more unforgettable. The collector’s edition guide includes a sticker sheet and a code for the online version of the guide. Get this while you still can for the MSRP price!

*Game pictured does not come with guide

I very very rarely buy a "collector’s edition" of anything. Major’s Mask, however, has been my favorite game of all time since I first played it as a child. When I saw this guide, I simply couldn’t justify not buying it.

First of all, this book is gorgeous inside and out. It’s absolutely amazing and looks incredible. Secondly, it really is helpful for those that haven’t played the game before. The detail it goes into with the walkthrough is simply stunning.
However, I doubt there are many people looking at this item as a necessity for playing the game. It’s largely a gorgeous display piece, and it suits that purpose very well.
